A Hero's Journey

Walking the Road of Honor with Prophet Yusuf

Stories of the Prophets

A boy is thrown into a well by his own brothers. Decades later, he stands over the treasury of Egypt and tells them there is no blame upon them.

Between those two scenes lies a slave market, a locked room, a false accusation, a prison cell, and a king who could not read his own dream. Yusuf walked all of it without being told where it led. Only at the far end, looking back, could he name what had been at work the whole time:

{My Lord is (Latif) subtle in bringing about what He wills.)

Luf is the mercy that reaches a servant from where he cannot perceive it, and lifts him to high stations by means of the very things he hates. It is the one attribute of Allah this sürah withholds for a hundred ayãt, and it can only be spoken from the throne.

Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that this story holds more than a thousand benefits, and hoped one day to gather them in a book of its own. He never did. Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab recorded over 350 benefits from it. This volume walks the road he described, chapter by chapter, drawing on Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Kathir, Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and al-Sadi, and on more than seventy classical works besides.
