You should know that ahlul-Hadith, aşhabul-Hadith and ahlul-Athar are all terms that refer to the same group of people. They are ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama and they are the Salafiyyun. They follow the Sunnah of Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم according to the understanding of his Companions (Allah be pleased with them). So, these are not mere labels without substance; rather, the proof of adherence is seen in the manifestation of the correct belief, speech and actions. Adherents are distinguished due to their giving preference to the two Revelations, the Qur'ăn and Sunnah, over and above the opinions of men and beyond any allegiance to tribes, customs, nations, and leaders. Furthermore, following the proofs found in the Ahadith and what is derived from them is given precedence over following a shaikh, a great scholar, or a Madhhab that contradicts them.

The Madhhab and methodology of the great scholars of Hadith was to establish their positions and rulings in all aspects of the Religion upon the Book of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and Sunnah of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. This is the way of the scholars of Sunnah, past and present. Allah (the Most High) has commanded the people to follow the Revelation, and that is the Book and Sunnah.
