What is presented before the respected reader is a transcribed lesson by the distinguished scholar and muhaddith, Shaykh Hammad ibn Muhammad al-Ansari رحمة الله [d. 1418H], entitled Tafsir of Sürah al-Fatihah and the Types of Tawhid Contained Within It.
It is a concise yet comprehensive exposition of the greatest chapter of the Qur'an, grounded in the Qur'ân, the Sunnah, and the understanding of the pious predecessors.
The Shaykh opens by establishing the supreme importance of Tawhid and its centrality to the Quran, demonstrating how Surah al-Fatihah encompasses the entirety of Tawhid in its three well-known categories - Tawhid al- Rububiyyah, Tawhid al-Ulühiyyah, and Tawhid al-Asmä' wa al-Şifat.
He addresses the names of the Surah, its place of revelation, its relationship to the hadith qudsi on the division of prayer. and the three categories of people reflected in its closing verses. He draws connections between the Surah's opening and the closing of the Quran in Surah al-Nãs, showing how the Book of Allah begins and ends upon the same foundation.
Throughout, the Shaykh warns against the distortions of the theologians and philosophers, affirms the methodology of the Salaf, and clarifies the tools of Arabic rhetoric as they relate to understanding the Qur'án.
