The Legality of Performing the Prayer in Shoes

On the authority of "Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-As who said:

"I saw the Prophet  (صَلّ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) pray both barefooted and whilst wearing shoes." Authentic: narrated by Abü Dawüd, 653, and graded authentic by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih Sunan Abi Dawüd: 660.

This book discusses the abandoned Sunnah of praying in shoes, citing numerous ahadith that confirm its permissibility through the speech and visual observation of the noble Messenger (صَلّ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ). It also teaches the reader the conditions of praying in shoes. Finally, it confronts the issue of abandoning this prophetic practice due to misplaced fear and over analysis of impurities. The noble author penned this short but exemplary work due to the widespread modern-day opposition to praying in shoes by most Muslims. It equips the reader with ample evidence that praying in shoes is a well-established Sunnah.

The book is carefully organized in chapters that address the evidence for praying in shoes, where to place shoes that are removed (during prayer), and the requirement and meaning of cleanliness when praying in shoes (or socks). The author then turns to the harms of abandoning this Sunnah and refutes those who outright reject praying in shoes. The book concludes with two appendixes addressing the rulings on wiping over socks to pray, and purification of impurities on shoes and the dangers of doubts and over investigation in this regard.

The author, the Subduer of Innovation, Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadii (رَحمَهُ الله), was from the foremost scholars of Yemen, widely responsible for the revival of the Sunnah in his land during the late 20th century. He authored countless books and lectures during his lifetime.
